How to ask for dog

Guide dog for the blind people is a compensational help in compliance with a notice by the Ministry of work and social affairs 182/1991 Sb. which includes a law about social provision of a compensational help. The price of getting such a help can be covered up to 100% by the social branch of the office with a variety of agencies (city and district offices). Each citizen of Czech Republic is eligible for the financial help for a guide dog as long as they have a document of certain conveniences level 3 due to being vision impaired. For the financial help, one needs to submit a request to the social office in the area where one lives.

The price of a handed over guide dog at this time is between 180-190,000 CZK.

The request for a guide dog must follow certain rules. At our institution we use this policy:

  • Contact a worker from our institution, who will present all information, subsequently participation in the instructional course at Czech Guide Dog School. Each graduate of this course receives a confirmation document of their graduation and can sign an agreement about the implementation of the services.
  • In the moment when the term of handing over the dog is known, the clients should contact their respective office, where they will request the financial help for acquiring a compensational help. The confirmation of the graduation of the instructional course is a part of this request.
  • At the same time that the request is put in, the social office receives a potential cost bill from Czech Guide Dog School - the price of the rendered dog. The employee of the office is then invited to the last examination of the dog.
  • The training of the dog is finished by passing the final test and the handing over of the guide dog begins.

If someone is in a life situation where they need a guide dog, then they need a large sum of information to make the decision. Guide dogs become companions of their owners for a good 10 years, and so the decision to get a guide dog needs to be considered thoroughly. For his owner, the guide dog is a guide that is always ready to go out and travel. He is a companion and a friend, but he is also an animal who is fully dependent on his owner. Therefore, there is a course at Czech Guide Dog School, preceding the official requests for a guide dog, and we concentrate on mutual awareness of the clients and Czech Guide Dog School workers.
